Accommodation Notification

Instructors are informed of accommodations through Accommodation Notification sent by the student.

Important Information about Accommodation Notification

  • Accommodation Notification should be sent as soon as accommodations have been approved by the DRC, and, ideally, at the beginning of each semester. However, the DRC approves accommodations throughout the semester for many needs and instructors may receive notification of accommodations later in the semester in some cases.
  • The student is strongly encouraged to meet with instructors to discuss the approved accommodation(s). If the student’s self-advocacy efforts are not successful, the student should inform the DRC.
  • Notification of accommodation(s) is sent in the form of an email and lists the student’s approved accommodations.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to send Notification Letters.
  • Accommodation Notification must be sent to the instructor prior to receiving accommodations in the course. Accommodations are generally not retroactive.
  • Some accommodations may take additional time to implement.
  • Student may opt not to notify certain instructors; however, no accommodations will be approved for classes without the student submitting the formal notification of accommodations.

Students should complete the following steps each semester to help ensure a smooth implementation of accommodations:

Step 1: Send Accommodation Notification
For a student to receive accommodations each semester, it is the student’s responsibility to send Accommodation Notification to their instructors. This should be completed as close to the start of the semester as possible. In the case of accommodations being approved later in the semester, notification will occur at a later date in the semester.

Step 2: Meet with Instructors
Students are strongly encouraged to arrange a one-on-one meeting with instructors to review the Notification Letter and to discuss how accommodations will be provided in the course. Students do not need to disclose their disability but should discuss the specific accommodations.

Step 3: Remain in Communication with Instructors and the DRC
Students will need to contact the DRC office if the nature of the disability changes. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange accommodations as needed.
